Diabetes mellitus je metabolické onemocnění, které zhoršuje morbitidu i mortalitu postižených osob. Vzhledem k nárůstu počtu onemocnění, a to hlavně diabetiků 2. typu, lze hovořit jen s malou nadsázkou o -globální epidemii diabetu-. Celosvětová statistika uvádí 200 milionů diagnostikovaných diabetiků 2. typu. V České republice bylo ke konci roku 1998 hlášeno 609 030 diabetiků. Velká americká studie Diabetes Control and Complication Trial (DCCT)(1), ukončená v roce 1993, ukázala těsný vztah mezi úrovní kompenzace a vznikem chronických komplikací. Byla ale věnována jen diabetikům 1. typu. Diabetikům 2. typu byla věnována rozsáhlá, prospektivní multicentrická anglická studie: United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), která je předmětem našeho sdělení.
