Přes průkazný vliv betablokátorů na snížení kardiovaskulární mortality a zlepšení kvality života u nemocných s některými formami ischemické choroby srdeční a snížení celkové mortality a rizika náhlé srdeční smrti u pacientů s chronickým srdečním selháním, je jejich použití v běžné praxi dosud nedostačující. Často se stává, že terapie betablokátory nejenže není ve výše uvedených indikacích zahajována, ale dokonce je tato terapie někdy přerušena a nahrazena léky, které přežívání nemocných neovlivňují nebo dokonce zhoršují. Přehledný článek rekapituluje poznatky, které vycházejí z výsledků randomizovaných kontrolovaných studií a které se týkají použití betablokátorů v terapii ischemické choroby srdeční a chronického srdečního selhání.
