Aortální stenóza patří dnes mezi nejčastější chlopenní vady. Je to důsledek stárnutí populace s častějším výskytem degenerativních změn. Zvláště častá je aortální kalcifikovaná aortální stenóza nemocných staršího věku, která má určitou etiopatogenetickou souvislost s koronární tepennou nemocí. Má také podobné příznaky. Z důvodu mnohem frekventnější ischemické choroby srdeční lékaři častěji myslí na koronární tepennou nemoc a aortální stenózu přehlížejí. Tento omyl může mít tragické důsledky pro nemocného.
