CONTRACEPTION AND SEXUAL CONTAGIOUS DISEASES

Sexually active women of a fertile age are in danger of both unwanted gravidity and of sexually-linked diseases. A great number of women firmly believe that a proper use of contraception will protect them against both risks. The aim of this communication is to present an objective view of the present knowlodge of this subject and their relationship to some contra-ceptive methods, and at the same time to introduce the epidemilogically important sexual contagious infections. The material presented was obtained by recent research and the knowledge gained over many years of clinical practice of the author. The article is devided into three chapters and as a conclusion there are presented the basic recomendations for women using contraception. A case of vaginal infection is not usually a contraindication to contraception. The only protection against bac-terial and sexually contagious viral infections is the barrier contraceptive method. The effectiveness of barrier contraceptive methods increases with the simultaneous use of spermicides.

Every citizen is obliged to look after his own health. In the area of reproductive medicine this trivial clause changes to an imperative, which applies to both patient and health service officers alike.
