Chronic sinusitis – with its 15% prevalence in population – represents one of the most common diseases in everyday practice in otolaryngology. The aetiology of chronic sinusitis is endogenous: the most frequent cause of the disease is allergic and non-allergic hypersensitivity of the immune system. The diagnostics covers a wide range of nosologic units including diseases with serious prognosis, which, if misdiagnosed – may lead to death or serious health damage. The therapy of chronic sinusitis must reflect the aetiology of the disease – the most frequent method of treatment is functional endoscopic sinus surgery in combination with subsequent conservative therapy with topical corticosteroids.
