Vitamin D and “frailty syndrome”

In modern gerontology the frailty syndrome describes not only “fragility” of locomotive apparatus and his increased susceptibility to

falls and fractures. It describes complex syndrome, which implicates inclination to frequent organ decompensations, infectious episodes,

to mental unstableness and related quicker decrease of cognitive functions too. The basic discrepancy between this syndrome

and chronological age is potential reversibility of frailty syndrome. One of the most important factor makes possible this reversibility

is the vitamin D and its long term low serum level in older age. The lowered saturation of vitamin D correlates with decrease of cognitive

functions in older age and negatively influences moods up to origin of depression. The lowered saturation plays an important role

in support immunity too. On the part of look osteologist is reduced level of vitamin D as increased hazard of fall and fracture at older

patient. On this hazard takes part osteoporosis and decrease of function and quantity muscular masses, so called sarcopenia. Sufficient

supplementaton of vitamin D is one of the pharmacological goals in care of patient with frailty syndrome.
