Předpokládat, že se současné filozoficko-názorové klima v naší společnosti jednoznačně orientuje materialisticky a ateisticky, je mylné. Žijeme sice v postupující sekularizaci, kde se na jedné straně ze života současníků vytrácí povědomí tradičních křesťanských hodnot a z nich vycházejících životních postojů a jednání člověka, na druhé straně lze zaznamenat nástup pestrého náboženského synkretizmu a alternativně religiózních směrů, které poznáváme pod pojmy New Age, Nová spiritualita nebo Východní mysticizmus.

V obraze dnešních psychóz nebo neuróz nenacházíme již tradiční hlasy andělů nebo ďáblů, ani fobie z hříchů nebo věčného zavržení, ale setkáváme se stále častěji s úzkostmi a depresemi u obětí náboženských sekt nebo závislostí na psychokultech a léčitelích, kteří vytváří -religio sui generis-.
